God shaped many events over the course of four years, leading to the first worship service of Northlake Baptist Chapel on December 8,1974-then located in a residential home near the present campus. Orchard Hills Baptist Church (our sponsoring congregation), Dallas Baptist Association, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas all cooperated in planting this mission, contributing both members and money in the early years. Dr. Ralph Phelps served as the first mission pastor, followed by Bill Walters (who also served as general contractor when the original building was constructed).
Northlake moved from the residential location to its present campus-then comprised of six acres-on February 13,1976 under the leadership of pastor Calvin Ussery; at the same time, they became an independent congregation, Northlake Baptist Church. In April of 1978, they called Bob Dean as pastor and enjoyed his twenty-eight year tenure until 2006, when Dr. Dean was elected as Executive Director of the Dallas Baptist Association.
In June of 1978, Lynn Christie, became Northlake's Minister of Music and Youth; he served in this combination position until 1982, when additions to the ministerial staff allowed him to concentrate on music ministry where he currently serves. Northlake's staff has included several long-tenured ministers:
- Sylvia Stanford - Minister to Children (1984-1991)
- John Neesly - Minister to Students/Assistant Pastor (1984-1991)
- John Hall - Minister to Students (1990-1994)
- Shawn Risinger - Minister of Adult Education (1992-1997)
- Chris Trent - Minister to Students (1997-2004)
- Woody Oliver - Associate Pastor (2000-2005)
- Bod Dean - Pastor (1978-2006)
- Jennifer Evans - Children's Minister (1998-2009)
In June of 2007, Northlake called current pastor, John Carl, who has led Northlake to embrace her current congregational vision: Exalting the Lord => Equipping the believer => Engaging the world. Bill Swinney was called as Minister of Education and Administration in April of 2008 and A.J. Neely was called as student minister in April of 2009.
Throughout Northlake's history, there have been SIX major building campaigns, culminating in the excellent facilities now enjoyed by the church's membership. In addition, two major land purchases have increased the campus size to almost 10 acres.
Northlake's Spanish-speaking mission, Casa de Poder, which was planted in 1998, now has her own building. In 1999 the church called Agustin Rafaelano as their pastor, where he served until May of 2009. In February of 2010, the church called Oscar Castillo to serve as their new pastor, looking forward to the future as God leads the way.
